UCSF Center for Surgery in Older Adults transforms surgical care so that older adults can achieve their treatment goals and maintain independence and vitality.
Goals
Providing patient-centered surgical care in the older adult by:
- Individualizing and enhancing risk communication between patients and their care providers
- Fostering patient-centered surgical decision-making so that patients can achieve their goals before and after surgery
- Helping patients get fit for surgery
- Delivering perioperative care that incorporate best practices in geriatric surgery
- Facilitating safe transitions to home and independence after surgery
Pioneering care improvement in older surgical patients by:
- Identifying and refining best practices in geriatric surgery through outcomes assessment, comparative effectiveness analyses, and interventional trials
- Discover barriers to delivery of optimal care and improve implementation of interdisciplinary patient-centered surgical care for older adults
Providing training in geriatric surgery principles and practices by creating educational programs to train future care providers by:
- Innovating new models of interdisciplinary care training where trainees across disciplines learn side by side to care for older surgical patients
